Competitive Boxing Team in Toronto
Train. Prepare. Compete.
Interested in taking your boxing to the competitive level?
The Toronto Boxing Academy Competitive Team is for athletes who want to develop their boxing skills, prepare for competition and represent TBA at club shows and amateur boxing tournaments.
Whether you already have competition experience or competing is a future goal, there is a path to get there.
Competition is not something every TBA member is expected to pursue. It is a choice. But for those who choose to compete, there is a commitment that comes with representing Toronto Boxing Academy.
If you're completely new to the sport and competition is a future goal, our Beginner Boxing Classes in Toronto page explains how to get started and begin building your foundation.
The TBA Competitive Boxing Program
Our goal is to develop boxers who are technically prepared, properly conditioned and ready to compete when opportunities become available.
Toronto Boxing Academy has a history of developing athletes from beginners through to competitive boxers, including Ontario Golden Gloves winners, national champions and professional fighters.
You can learn more about some of the athletes who have represented Toronto Boxing Academy on our Champions Built at Toronto Boxing Academy page.
TBA coaches will actively look for appropriate club shows and competition opportunities for members of the Competitive Team. We also plan to attend amateur boxing tournaments throughout the year.
Before your name is put forward for a potential bout, we will speak with you about the opportunity.
Being part of the Competitive Team does not mean you are required to fight every month. However, you should be training and preparing with the mindset that an appropriate competition opportunity could become available.
Tier 2 Membership Is Required for Competition
Anyone who wants to compete and represent Toronto Boxing Academy must have our Tier 2 – Advanced Boxing Membership at $185 + HST per month.
Tier 2 provides access to the training needed to progress toward competition, including:
- Boxing Bootcamp
- Box-Tech
- Technical Sparring
- Sparring
- Open Gym
You can learn more about how our advanced training progresses from technical development into live application on our Box-Tech, Technical Sparring & Sparring page.
Joining Tier 2 does not automatically place an athlete on the Competitive Team or guarantee competition.
Competition readiness is determined by TBA coaches based on your skill development, consistency, conditioning, preparation and ability to safely compete.
Our Schedule Is Built for Competitive Development
We have purposely structured our training schedule so that Box-Tech and Technical Sparring sessions are followed by a Boxing Bootcamp.
Competitive athletes are encouraged to stay for both.
Box-Tech and Technical Sparring provide opportunities to work on higher-level boxing skills, including defence, counters, footwork, movement, timing and applying your skills against another boxer.
Following those sessions with Boxing Bootcamp provides additional conditioning while continuing to reinforce the boxing fundamentals every competitive boxer needs.
Reps and time in the gym matter.
There are no shortcuts around consistently practising the fundamentals.
Use Open Gym to Get Your Rounds In
Competitive development doesn't only happen during scheduled classes.
Tier 2 members are encouraged to take advantage of our Open Gym times to put in additional work.
Use that time to shadowbox, work the heavy bags, skip, practise footwork, repeat combinations and work on areas your coaches have identified for improvement.
Not every training session needs to be complicated.
Sometimes you simply need more quality rounds.
Those rounds add up.
You can learn more about our Boxing Bootcamp, Box-Tech and Open Gym training options on our Boxing Bootcamp & Open Gym page.
Competitive Team Training Requirements
Being part of the TBA Competitive Team requires a commitment beyond simply having a Tier 2 membership.
Competitive athletes are expected to:
- Train at Toronto Boxing Academy a minimum of 3 days per week
- Regularly attend Boxing Bootcamp, Box-Tech, Technical Sparring and Sparring as appropriate
- Use Open Gym when possible for additional skill development and rounds
- Complete required roadwork outside of the gym
- Complete 5 km runs, sprint work and other conditioning as assigned
- Maintain the consistency necessary to remain prepared for competition
- Maintain the required Boxing Ontario registration, medicals and documentation
- Communicate with coaches regarding injuries, availability and upcoming competition
Meeting the three-day minimum does not automatically guarantee that an athlete will compete.
Coaches will determine when an athlete is appropriately prepared and ready to represent Toronto Boxing Academy.
The Commitment to Compete
Competing is a choice.
You do not have to compete to train at Toronto Boxing Academy, and having a Tier 2 membership does not mean you are required to become a competitive boxer.
However, choosing to represent TBA in competition means accepting the commitment that comes with it.
Your coaches and teammates are investing their time and effort into helping you develop and prepare. We expect our competitive athletes to be willing to put that same effort into their own development and into the team.
That means showing up consistently, getting your rounds in, completing your conditioning and roadwork, listening to your coaches and doing the work necessary to be properly prepared.
If the minimum training requirements are not being met, you will not be entered into competition or represent Toronto Boxing Academy at that time.
This isn't about missing an occasional workout because of work, school, family or other responsibilities.
It's about establishing a standard.
If you choose to compete, we expect you to prepare like a competitor.
Fight Ready Doesn't Mean Fighting Every Month
Being part of the Competitive Team does not guarantee a certain number of fights.
There are many factors involved in finding an appropriate bout, including experience, age, weight, availability and suitable opponents.
Our expectation is not that every competitive athlete fights every month.
Our expectation is that you train consistently enough to be ready when the right opportunity becomes available.
We will actively look for appropriate competition opportunities for athletes who have demonstrated the preparation and commitment necessary to represent TBA.
Want Additional One-on-One Boxing Coaching?
Competitive athletes who want additional individual attention can also work with a TBA coach through our Personal Training Boxing in Toronto program.
One-on-one coaching can provide additional time to work on specific areas such as technique, defence, movement, pad work, strategy and other areas identified by you and your coach.
Personal training is not required to be part of the Competitive Team, but it is available for athletes who want additional individual coaching.
