What to Expect in Your First Boxing Class
Starting at Toronto Boxing Academy
Walking into a boxing gym for the first time can feel a little intimidating.
You might be wondering:
Am I fit enough?
Do I need experience?
What if I don’t know what I’m doing?
The truth is — everyone starts somewhere. And at Toronto Boxing Academy, your first class is designed to help you feel comfortable, learn the basics, and leave feeling like you accomplished something.
Here’s exactly what you can expect.
You Don’t Need Experience
One of the biggest misconceptions about boxing is that you need to know how to punch before you walk in.
You don’t.
Our classes are structured so beginners can jump in right away. We’ll guide you through the fundamentals step by step — stance, movement, and basic punches — at a pace that makes sense.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is learning.
A Welcoming Environment
You’ll quickly notice that the gym is made up of people at all different levels.
Some are brand new.
Some have been training for years.
Some are here for fitness, and others are chasing competitive goals.
But everyone shares the same space and supports each other. There’s no pressure to “keep up” — just focus on your own progress.
That supportive atmosphere is something we take a lot of pride in.
What the Class Looks Like
While each session has its own focus, most classes follow a similar flow:
Warm-up
Light movement to get the body ready — think skipping, mobility, and simple drills.
Skill Work
You’ll learn boxing fundamentals like stance, footwork, and basic punches. This could be shadowboxing, partner drills, or working on the bags.
Conditioning
A mix of boxing-specific conditioning to build endurance, strength, and coordination.
Cool Down
A chance to bring your heart rate down and reset before heading out.
It’s a full workout, but it’s structured so you can go at your own pace.
What to Bring
For your first class, you don’t need much:
Comfortable workout clothes
Indoor training shoes
Water
If you have your own gloves and hand wraps, bring them. If not, we’ll help you get set up and point you in the right direction.
It’s Normal to Feel Out of Your Comfort Zone
Trying something new always comes with a bit of uncertainty. That’s part of the process.
Most people leave their first class realizing two things:
It wasn’t as intimidating as they expected
They feel better than they thought they would
That first step through the door is usually the hardest — after that, it gets easier each time you show up.
The First Step Toward Progress
Your first class isn’t about being perfect. It’s about getting started.
From there, confidence builds. Skills improve. Fitness improves. And before long, the gym starts to feel like a place you look forward to being.
If you’ve been thinking about trying boxing, this is your sign to take that first step.
We’ll meet you where you’re at and help you move forward — one round at a time.
