Technique Tuesday: How to Stop Getting Hit After You Punch

One of the most common mistakes in boxing isn’t throwing the wrong punch — it’s what happens after you throw it.

A lot of beginners (and even experienced boxers) land a punch… and then get hit right back.

Why?

Because they stay in the same spot, drop their hands, or admire their work for just a second too long.

If you want to improve quickly, you don’t just need better punches — you need better habits after your punches.

Why You’re Getting Hit After Punching

Most counters happen in the small gaps between actions.

Here’s what usually goes wrong:

  • Your hand doesn’t come back to guard
  • You stay planted after throwing
  • Your chin lifts during the exchange
  • You pause instead of resetting

These small habits make you easy to time.

The Rule: Punch → Defend → Move

Every time you throw, you should immediately think:

“What’s next?”

Good boxing isn’t just offense — it’s continuous movement and awareness.

Key Habits to Fix This

1. Snap Every Punch Back to Guard

Your punch should return as fast as it goes out.

  • No slow retraction
  • No dropping your hand
  • Straight back to your face

Your guard is your safety.

2. Keep Your Chin Tucked

A lot of people lift their chin when they punch.

  • Keep your chin down
  • Eyes forward
  • Shoulders slightly raised for protection

This alone prevents a lot of clean shots.

3. Don’t Stay in Front After You Throw

Standing still is the easiest way to get countered.

After your combination:

  • Take a small step back
  • Pivot to the side
  • Or reset your stance

Movement keeps you safe.

4. Expect the Counter

Train your mindset to expect something coming back.

If you assume nothing is coming, you relax too early.

If you expect a counter, you stay ready.

Simple Drill to Fix This

Punch → Move Drill

  1. Throw a 1–2 (jab-cross)
  2. Immediately:
    • Step back OR pivot
  3. Reset your stance
  4. Repeat

Then progress to:

  • 3–4 punch combinations
  • Always finishing with movement

This builds automatic habits.

Common Mistakes

Watch for these:

  • Admiring your punches
  • Dropping your hands after combinations
  • Throwing without thinking about defence
  • Freezing after you land

Fix these and your sparring improves fast.

Final Thoughts

Most people focus on how to hit harder or faster.

But one of the biggest upgrades you can make is learning how not to get hit after you punch.

Clean boxing is about control, not chaos.
