Technique Tuesday: How to Control the Pace of a Fight
One of the biggest differences between beginner and experienced boxers isn’t technique — it’s control.
Specifically, controlling the pace of the fight.
Some fighters move too fast and burn out. Others move too slow and get overwhelmed. The best boxers know how to set the tempo and force their opponent to fight on their terms.
Why Pace Matters
If you control the pace, you control:
- When exchanges happen
- How much energy is used
- The rhythm of the fight
A fast pace benefits aggressive fighters.
A slower pace benefits technical fighters.
The key is learning how to switch between both.
How to Control the Pace
1. Use Your Jab to Set Rhythm
The jab is your metronome. Fast jab = fast pace. Controlled jab = slower pace.
2. Control Your Breathing
If your breathing is rushed, your movement will be too.
3. Pick When to Engage
You don’t have to respond to every exchange. Choose your moments.
4. Reset Often
After combinations, reset and slow things down before re-engaging.
Simple Drill
Pace Control Rounds
Round 1: Slow pace (focus on control)
Round 2: Fast pace (high output)
Round 3: Mix both
Learn to switch gears.
Final Thoughts
You don’t have to fight fast to win — you have to fight smart.
