Technique Tuesday: Better Breathing, Better Boxing

Most people think boxing performance comes down to speed, power, and conditioning.

All of those matter.

But one of the most overlooked skills in boxing is breathing.

Poor breathing creates tension, drains energy, and makes decision-making harder.

Good breathing improves endurance, movement, and composure.

This is something we focus on in our Boxing for Fitness in Toronto programs because proper breathing improves both performance and recovery.

Common Breathing Mistakes

Many boxers:

  • Hold their breath while punching
  • Breathe too shallow
  • Tighten their shoulders
  • Forget to recover between exchanges

These habits create unnecessary fatigue.

How to Breathe Better

1. Exhale with Every Punch

A short exhale helps relax the body and improve rhythm.

2. Stay Relaxed Between Exchanges

Tension wastes energy.

Learn to reset your breathing when you're not attacking.

3. Breathe Through Movement

Footwork and breathing should work together.

4. Recover Between Rounds

Use deep, controlled breaths to recover faster.

Training Drill

Shadowbox for three rounds.

Focus on:

  • Breathing out with every punch
  • Staying relaxed
  • Maintaining rhythm

Ignore speed and power.

Focus only on breathing.

Why This Matters

One of the Benefits of Boxing Training is learning how to manage stress.

Good breathing improves both physical and mental performance.

Final Thoughts

Better breathing creates better boxing.

Before you focus on hitting harder, focus on breathing better.
