Technique Tuesday: You Don't Have to Win Every Exchange to Win the Fight
Every boxer has experienced it.
You get hit with a clean punch and immediately feel the urge to fire back.
It's a natural reaction, but it isn't always the smartest one.
One of the biggest lessons we teach in our Beginner Boxing Classes in Toronto is that boxing isn't about winning every exchange—it's about making better decisions over the course of an entire round.
Great boxers understand that patience is a skill.
Sometimes the best response isn't another punch.
Sometimes it's taking a breath, resetting your position, and waiting for a better opportunity.
Think Beyond the Last Punch
Imagine playing chess.
You wouldn't sacrifice your queen just because your opponent took a pawn.
Every move has a purpose.
Boxing is no different.
When you become focused on "getting even," you stop thinking strategically.
Instead, ask yourself:
"What's my best option right now?"
That answer isn't always another punch.
Three Habits of Smart Boxers
1. Reset Before You React
After every exchange:
- Recover your stance.
- Bring your hands back.
- Re-establish your distance.
Only then decide what comes next.
2. Don't Let Emotion Control Technique
Getting frustrated usually leads to:
- swinging wildly
- overcommitting
- getting countered
The calmer fighter usually makes the better decisions.
3. Trust Your Defence
Not every exchange needs an immediate response.
Good defence creates better offensive opportunities later.
That's why we spend so much time developing defensive habits in both our group classes and Personal Training Boxing Toronto sessions.
Common Mistakes
-Throwing back immediately after getting hit
-Forgetting your footwork
-Chasing the exchange
-Fighting emotionally
Training Drill
During light sparring:
Every time your partner lands a clean shot:
- Take one controlled breath.
- Reset your guard.
- Re-establish your jab.
- Continue boxing.
You'll quickly notice how much calmer your decision-making becomes.
Coach Brock's Tip
The goal isn't to win every exchange.
The goal is to make more good decisions than your opponent over the course of the fight.
That's what wins rounds.
Final Thoughts
One of the greatest Benefits of Boxing Training is learning patience under pressure.
The next time you get hit, resist the urge to immediately throw back.
Take a breath.
Reset.
Then box.
