Technique Tuesday: Make Your Opponent Throw First
One of the biggest misconceptions in boxing is that the fighter throwing the most punches is controlling the fight.
In reality, many experienced boxers spend just as much time creating opportunities as they do attacking.
Learning to make your opponent throw first is one of the best ways to improve your timing, reaction, and overall ring IQ.
It's also something we introduce as students progress through our Beginner Boxing Classes in Toronto, because patience is just as important as punch selection.
Why This Works
Every punch your opponent throws gives you information.
You'll notice:
- how they move
- how they recover
- whether they overcommit
- if they drop their hands
- what combinations they favour
That information helps you make better decisions.
Four Ways to Draw the Lead
1. Use Small Feints
A subtle shoulder twitch.
A slight level change.
A half-step.
Small movements often create big reactions.
2. Change Your Distance
Take a small step just outside their range.
Many opponents will instinctively follow.
Now they've committed.
3. Stay Relaxed
Tension makes you predictable.
Relaxed fighters recognize opportunities sooner.
This is one reason our Boxing for Fitness in Toronto classes emphasize controlled movement instead of rushing every exchange.
4. Trust Your Defence
If you're confident in your defence, you're willing to be patient.
Patience creates better counters.
Common Mistakes
- Waiting without purpose
- Over-feinting
- Leaning backward instead of moving your feet
- Throwing counters too early
Training Drill
Partner Drill
Partner A throws single jabs.
Partner B can only defend and counter.
Switch every two minutes.
Focus on recognition—not speed.
Coach Brock's Tip
Good boxers create opportunities.
Great boxers let their opponents create them.
Patience often lands the cleanest punches.
