Technique Tuesday: What to Do After You Get Hit

Every boxer gets hit.

Whether you're brand new to the sport or have years of experience, getting touched is part of boxing. What separates experienced boxers from beginners isn't whether they get hit—it's how they respond afterward.

Many people panic, throw wild punches, or forget their fundamentals. The best fighters stay composed, reset, and get back to boxing.

This is something we focus on regularly in our Beginner Boxing Classes in Toronto because developing composure under pressure is one of the most important skills a boxer can learn.

Why Most Fighters Make Mistakes After Getting Hit

When you get hit, your body's natural reaction is often emotional rather than technical.

Common mistakes include:

  • Throwing punches back immediately without thinking

  • Dropping your hands

  • Standing still

  • Forgetting to breathe

  • Abandoning footwork

These reactions often lead to getting hit again.

The Defensive Reset System

1. Take a Breath

One clean breath can reset your nervous system.

Many fighters hold their breath after getting hit, which increases tension and causes poor decisions.

2. Bring Your Hands Back to Guard

Before you think about offence, think about protection.

A good guard buys you time to assess what's happening and make smart decisions.

3. Move Your Feet

After getting hit, don't stay in the same position.

Take a small step, pivot, or reset your distance.

Movement creates opportunities and reduces the chance of getting caught by follow-up punches.

4. Re-Establish the Jab

The jab is often the fastest way to regain control.

A good jab:

  • Re-establishes distance

  • Interrupts your opponent's rhythm

  • Gives you time to reset

If you're looking to improve your jab and overall fundamentals, check out our Beginner Boxing Classes in Toronto.

Simple Drill

Try this during your next training session:

Reset Drill

  1. Throw a combination.

  2. Have your partner lightly counter.

  3. Focus on:

    • Breathing

    • Guard recovery

    • Footwork reset

    • Re-establishing the jab

Repeat for 3 rounds.

Why This Matters Beyond Boxing

One of the biggest Benefits of Boxing Training is learning how to stay calm under pressure.

Boxing teaches you to recover from mistakes, adapt, and move forward rather than panic.

Those skills transfer into work, relationships, and everyday life.

Final Thoughts

Getting hit isn't failure.

Losing your composure afterward is where problems start.

The next time you get touched in sparring or drills, remember:

Breathe.

Protect yourself.

Move your feet.

Get back to your jab.

Train smart,
